John HAMILTON is my mystery man, along with his elusive wife Jane THOMPSON. There is a story that John, too young to join the war effort, was at home with his mother when a wounded British officer by the name of HILLHOUSE found himself at the HAMILTON farm, and for some reason his father, Andrew, decided to take care of him. John was assigned the duty of caring for Major HILLHOUSE. They kept him in the barn so that the family guests would not hear his moans.
Major HILLHOUSE was so grateful that he offered to take young John back to England with him and pay for his education. The HAMILTONS accepted the offer and off they went. Allegedly, the HILLHOUSES tried to convince John to be adopted by them, as they wanted him for their son. John declined the offer, and after marrying a woman who died childless, found he missed his home, and returned to Abbeville, SC. The mystery is that I haven't been able to find a record of this HILLHOUSE or any reference to John's wife's name(either of them)
John, according to family tradition, married Jane THOMPSON. I am desperately seeking proof of this! Supposedly she was the sister of Nancy who married John's brother Archibald.
